We invite you to join us at this year’s BeFem Conference “Who’s Afraid of Women?”, taking place on November 27 from 11 AM and 28 from 12 PM at Prostor Miljenko Dereta in Belgrade.

The conference will bring together women, allies, and partners from different generations and parts of the region – activists, journalists, artists, researchers, and theorists. Together, we will reflect on the continuity of feminist resistance, the challenges of institutionalizing feminist politics, the relationship between art and politics in times of rising anti-gender movements, and the contemporary crises that shape our everyday lives.

One of the major obstacles faced both in Serbia and across the region is the increasingly hostile political climate, closely tied to the rise and influence of anti-gender movements. The lack of institutional support, disregard for the efforts of women’s groups, organizations, and networks to bring positive systemic change, and financial insecurity remain some of the key challenges, amplified by the global trend of strengthening anti-gender agendas.

The program opens with a discussion dedicated to generations of women who have built spaces of freedom through solidarity and work, and continues with panels on the female voice as political resistance, the role of media in amplifying marginalized voices, art as a form of struggle against anti-gender narratives, and institutional pressures and co-optation faced by feminist organizations throughout the region.

On the second day, the conference focuses on regional cooperation and contemporary political challenges: from women’s everyday engagement in public life to questions of responsibility, censorship, and solidarity in the context of global crises and wars.

The BeFem Conference is a space of exchange, inspiration, and resistance – a meeting point where theory, art, and activism intersect, and where the living thread of feminist struggle continues from one generation to the next.

Simultaneous translation into English will be provided during the first day of the program.
